At the recent Indiana 911 Professionals Conference, Within the Trenches podcast host Ricardo sits down with Heather Blaney, a dispatcher at Knox County 911 in Indiana, and her faithful companion, Nugget, a domestic skunk. This unique duo is making a difference in their community by using Nugget as an emotional support animal in the high-stress environment of an emergency communications center. In this blog post, we will explore the role of Nugget and the positive effects of emotional support animals in such crucial and demanding settings.

Breakout Session at the Indiana 911 Professionals Conference

Heather and Nugget recently attended the 2023 Indiana 911 Professionals Conference and presented a breakout session titled "Comms and Critters." Their session aimed to shed light on the potential of using animals beyond traditional therapy pets in emergency communications centers. They discussed the many benefits of introducing animals like pigs and reptiles and skunks into these settings, not only for emotional support but also for engaging with the community.

Nugget's Background and Personality

Nugget, a three-year-old domestic skunk, was adopted by Heather from Indiana Skunk Rescue. He was born domestically and has never known the wild. Despite Heather's initial reservations, Nugget quickly became inseparable from her. With deliberate socialization and the removal of his scent glands, Nugget developed a unique and friendly personality, making him an ideal emotional support animal.

Nugget's Role in the Communications Center

Nugget's primary role in the communications center is to provide comfort and support during and after difficult calls. From his warm and loving presence to the simple act of allowing dispatchers to pet him, Nugget has become a priceless resource for emotional relief in an otherwise intense and demanding environment. Heather explains that Nugget's ability to provide unconditional love and a sense of calm is invaluable to the dispatchers, helping them cope with the challenges they face daily.

Recognition and Media Attention

Nugget's impact on the community has not gone unnoticed. Knox County 911's unique initiative has garnered significant media attention. The dispatch center was invited to appear on popular shows such as Tucker Carlson and Inside Edition, which helped shed light on the importance of emotional support animals in emergency services. Nugget's charming personality and heartwarming interactions with the dispatchers have made him a local celebrity, capturing the hearts of many.

Supporting Nugget's Well-being

Being responsible for a skunk in a professional environment comes with certain challenges. Heather takes great care of Nugget's well-being, ensuring his diet consists of safe and healthy foods. Descented skunks, like Nugget, do not possess the ability to spray. Consequently, maintaining Nugget's health and preventing obesity, which can be detrimental to his species, are essential. Heather goes the extra mile to create a safe and comfortable environment for Nugget in the communications center.

Heather affirms that Nugget has adapted remarkably well to the unique sounds, tones, and lighting present in the communications center. His serene demeanor suggests that he either ignores these stimuli or has become accustomed to them over time. This adaptability makes Nugget an even more effective emotional support animal, offering comfort and solace to dispatchers during intense moments on the job.

Wrap up

The extraordinary bond between Heather and Nugget serves as a powerful reminder of the positive impact that emotional support animals can have in high-stress environments. Through their breakout session and the media attention they have received, Heather and Nugget are championing the use of animals beyond traditional therapy pets in emergency communications centers. Nugget's presence brings immeasurable comfort and support to the dispatchers at Knox County 911, highlighting the profound emotional connection humans can develop with animals.

By embracing the therapeutic benefits of emotional support animals like Nugget, emergency communications centers have the potential to significantly improve the well-being of their staff. Nugget's story serves as an inspiration to others, encouraging them to explore alternative methods of providing emotional support and fostering resilience in high-pressure work environments.

In an industry that often confronts the darkest moments of human experience, Nugget brings a ray of light and a reminder that even in the most challenging times, love and support can come in unexpected and heartwarming forms.

About Within the Trenches - True stories from the 911 dispatchers who live them

Within the Trenches started as a college project in 2010 around the time that the creator and host, Ricardo Martinez II, a 13 year public safety veteran, was struggling with the emergency calls he was taking in 9-1-1 dispatch. He discovered that it was therapeutic to share his dispatch stories, first through a blog, and then through podcasting. This podcast is based on the experience of being a 9-1-1 dispatcher. It gives a true depiction of what it's like to be in this profession. The stories involve all types of calls. The show is meant to be informative, humorous, serious and all around eye opening to the world of 9-1-1 dispatch. The idea for this started a long time ago and the video that started it all can be seen here.
